2 Must-Do Steps Before Applying for PA School
Embarking on the journey to become a Physician Associate (PA) is an exciting and rewarding endeavor, but it requires careful planning and preparation. For people of color aiming to enter PA school, the process can present unique challenges and opportunities.
In this blog post, we’ll delve into two crucial steps that go beyond conventional advice, tailored specifically for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Okay, so, first things first – before diving into the wild world of applying to P.A. school, let’s get real about the gig of a Physician Associate (P.A.).
You can read all the articles, watch all the videos, but trust me, you gotta throw on your shadowing hat. Like, you NEED to tag along with a P.A. to really grasp what it’s all about.
Now, I won’t sugarcoat it; finding someone to shadow ain’t a walk in the park. Been there, tried a bunch of things, and let me tell you, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
Step 1: 5 Strategies for Finding a PA to Shadow
Before diving into the application process, it’s imperative to gain a deep understanding of the role of a Physician Associate. Beyond the conventional research, a transformative experience comes from shadowing a practicing PA.
However, finding opportunities can be challenging. Here are some strategies, particularly relevant for individuals of color:
- Network Through Alumni: Check PA school websites for alumni contacts. Alumni, often passionate about their alma mater, can provide valuable insights and may even offer shadowing opportunities.
- Volunteer Strategically: Consider volunteering at a hospital, specifically in underserved communities where you can interact with PAs. This not only broadens your exposure to the field but also highlights your commitment to community health.
- Leverage Personal Connections: Don’t underestimate the power of your existing network. Ask your doctor or other healthcare professionals if they know PAs you could connect with for shadowing. Personal recommendations can open doors.
Engage Online Communities: Join PA forums and platforms where you can find mentors and peers who have walked a similar path. Online communities can be a valuable resource for advice and networking opportunities.
- Professional Organizations: Become a member of organizations like the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) or your state-affiliated PA organization. These platforms can connect you with established PAs and provide a supportive community.
Step 2: Take Initiative and Attend Open House Events
Apart from shadowing experiences, actively engaging with PA schools can significantly enhance your application. Attending open house events allows you to:
- Demonstrate Dedication: By participating in school events, you showcase your commitment to understanding the program thoroughly. This proactive
- Personalize Your Application: Seeing your name among the attendees at open house events makes you more than just an application. It humanizes you, allowing the admissions team to connect a face with your name and accomplishments.
- Evaluate Fit: Open house events offer a firsthand look at the program and its staff. Use this opportunity to assess whether the school’s mission aligns with your aspirations as a future PA.
- Showcase Your A-Game: Approach these events with enthusiasm and a genuine interest in the program. Be memorable; don’t be afraid to ask insightful questions and engage with faculty and current students.
Paying It Forward: My Journey to PA School, Inspired by Friendship and Mentorship
Embarking on the path to becoming a Physician Associate (PA) was a dream I held close to my heart, but the journey took an unexpected and inspiring turn, all thanks to the incredible connections forged through my dearest friend, Patricia Burrows, PA-C.
The Catalyst – Patricia Burrows: Patricia, not just a friend but a fellow PA, became the pivotal link in my quest to understand the world of PAs. Through her, I was introduced to the remarkable Ms. Jannet Wright-Watson. Jannet, an outstanding PA, educator, and an extraordinary woman, left an indelible mark on my journey. What made the connection even more special was the shared bond of graduating from the same program – the CUNY PA Program.
The Leap into Volunteering: Determined to gain firsthand experience, I decided to register as a volunteer at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where Jannet worked. Despite the demands of a full-time pharmaceutical job from 9 am to 5 pm, I eagerly set up a volunteering schedule, dedicating 2-3 evenings per week (and even weekends) to shadowing. The long hours were a small price to pay for the wealth of knowledge and exposure to outstanding medical cases.
Discovering Disparities and Autonomy: As I immersed myself in volunteering within the underserved community of Bronx, NY, the harsh realities of medical disparities became glaringly evident. Jannet, with her unparalleled warmth and dedication, not only helped me comprehend the multifaceted role of a PA but also illuminated the substantial autonomy that comes with the profession. It was a transformative experience that fueled my passion for making a positive impact in healthcare.
The Network of Aspiring PAs: Beyond the invaluable mentorship, shadowing alongside other aspiring PAs opened up a network of like-minded individuals sharing a common dream. The camaraderie we developed during those late-night shadowing sessions formed a support system that extended beyond the hospital walls.
The Synchronicity of Acceptance: In a delightful twist of fate, Jannet and I received acceptance letters simultaneously, joining the same cohort. Our shared journey through the rigors of PA school strengthened our bond and added a layer of camaraderie to our friendship.
Paying It Forward: Jannet’s philosophy of “paying it forward” resonated deeply with me. She emphasized the importance of extending a helping hand to others pursuing a PA career. This ethos became a driving force behind creating this blog – a platform to share experiences, insights, and resources to uplift and guide individuals facing the challenges of the PA school application.
My journey to PA school, fueled by the support of an amazing friend and mentor, is a testament to the power of connections and the transformative impact of mentorship.
Through this blog, I hope to inspire and guide fellow individuals of color on their unique paths to PA school, emphasizing the significance of paying it forward in building a supportive community within the healthcare profession.
Here’s to dreams realized, challenges overcome, and the joy of sharing the journey with others.
