🌿 My Journey in Bone Marrow Transplant: 🌿
From New Grad to Seasoned PA
Starting my career in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) was a challenging yet incredibly fulfilling experience. As a new graduate, the complexities of BMT initially felt overwhelming. My responsibilities were to see patients in the clinic and manage the CIBMTR research database. The transition from PA school, where I learned about hematology-oncology but not to the extent of BMT, was a significant challenge. I vividly remember my first days, armed with my Pocket Oncology book and my favorite stethoscope, diving into the intricacies of patient care.
My journey was marked by a relentless pursuit of knowledge. I was constantly immersed in Uptodate and my Pocket Oncology book, eager to learn more. Beyond the hematology aspect, I delved into the differences between allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplants, the side effects of stem cell transplants, the process of the transplant, blood count monitoring, and the post-transplant journey for patients and their families.
Participating in the CIBMTR conference was a turning point. These gatherings not only broadened my clinical knowledge but also elucidated the significance of the data we collected for the database. More importantly, they connected me with a community of dedicated professionals. The insights I gained and the relationships I formed during these conferences were instrumental in my professional growth.
Over time, I found my rhythm and learned to navigate the delicate balance of managing life-saving treatments and offering compassionate care to patients and their families. The hands-on experience and continuous learning through resources like Hematology-Oncology Therapy and Clinical Manual For The Oncology Advanced Practice Nurse helped me become a confident and competent PA.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been seeing the positive impact I made on patients’ lives. Whether through the successful management of a complex case or offering a comforting word to a worried patient, every day in BMT brought its unique challenges and triumphs.
In conjunction with working with my favorite colleagues, who were a PA and NP, we were able to create an educational program for stem cell transplant patients and their families. This program, which we developed over several months, aimed to provide a clear understanding of the process and side effects of treatment. We had to simplify complex medical terms, manage scheduling, and address the emotional toll of treatment, making it a challenging but ultimately rewarding endeavor.
I was working in an urban area, which was challenging because I had to convince patients to understand why research was important and the benefits of participating in our research studies. We had such an awesome team, and with an experienced research PA, we were able to encourage patients who fit the criteria to participate in the research studies.
As a seasoned PA, I am passionate about mentoring new graduates entering this field or any field of medicine. I’ve walked in your shoes and understand the excitement and uncertainty of starting your first job in a specialty. I aim to share the knowledge and tools that helped me succeed and be a resource for you as you embark on your journey.
